Windsurfing, though still in its infancy in India, is slowly gaining traction, thanks to favorable wind conditions along the country’s vast coastline. The 2024 Indian Windsurfing Championships, held in Goa, saw a record number of participants, with the spotlight falling on Aditya Mishra, a 21-year-old from Chennai, who won the men’s title.
Windsurfing schools in coastal regions like Goa, Tamil Nadu, and Kerala are seeing increasing enrollments, with more young athletes taking up the sport. The Windsurfing Association of India (WAI) has been working to promote the sport by organizing competitions and providing access to training programs.
The biggest challenge for Indian windsurfing is the high cost of equipment, which makes it difficult for many athletes to practice regularly. However, sponsorship deals and media coverage are helping to alleviate some of these financial barriers, making the sport more accessible to a wider audience.
With growing interest and international exposure, windsurfing in India is expected to flourish in the coming years, with young athletes like Aditya Mishra leading the way.
